The Anaheim Ducks have recently made a significant change in their broadcast strategy for the upcoming NHL season. Instead of airing their games on a regional sports network, the Ducks have decided to shift to a combination of direct-to-consumer streaming and local broadcasts.
In a recent announcement, the Ducks revealed that 65 games will be broadcast on an over-the-air channel in Los Angeles, making it more accessible to local fans. Additionally, the team has partnered with A Parent Media Co. Inc. to stream all games for free regionally on the Victory+ streaming service.
The decision to move away from Diamond Sports Group, whose contract expired at the end of the previous season, was driven by the Ducks’ desire to better connect with their fan base. According to Ducks president Aaron Teats, it is essential for the organization to ensure that all fans in their market have the opportunity to watch games across multiple platforms without any additional cost.
The Anaheim Ducks are not alone in making changes to their broadcast model this offseason. The Stanley Cup champion Florida Panthers and the Dallas Stars have also announced shifts in their local broadcasting agreements. The Panthers are moving their broadcasts to Scripps Sports, while the Stars will be streaming games regionally on Victory+.
The over-the-air games will be aired on Fox 11 Plus (KCOP Channel 13) in the Los Angeles area. Additionally, the Victory+ streaming app will be available for download on various devices in September, allowing Ducks fans in the regional territory to watch games for free. This includes fans in Orange, Los Angeles, Riverside, San Bernardino, San Diego, Imperial, Santa Barbara, Ventura counties, as well as Hawaii.
The new broadcast strategy implemented by the Anaheim Ducks signifies a shift towards a more fan-centric approach. By providing multiple viewing options, including over-the-air broadcasts and free streaming services, the team is aiming to enhance the overall fan experience and engagement.
