The Bears Add Darrell Taylor to Bolster Pass Rush

The Chicago Bears made a move to strengthen their pass rush by acquiring linebacker Darrell Taylor from the Seattle Seahawks. In exchange for the 2020 second-round pick, the Bears sent a 2025 sixth-round pick to Seattle. This trade comes after Taylor missed his rookie season due to a leg fracture and has since shown potential with 21.5 sacks in 49 games.

Bears Coach Matt Eberflus expressed his excitement about adding Taylor to the team, highlighting his sack production and pass-rushing abilities. Eberflus emphasized that Taylor’s effort, style, and disposition align well with the Bears’ defensive scheme. The move is seen as a strategic decision to pair Taylor with Pro Bowler Montez Sweat and bolster the Bears’ pass rush.

Prior to acquiring Taylor, the Bears had been pursuing a trade with the New England Patriots for Matthew Judon. However, negotiations fell through due to contract extension concerns. Despite initially planning to send a third-round pick to New England for Judon, the Bears shifted their focus to Taylor after the deal with Judon did not materialize.

The Seahawks opted to trade Taylor to Chicago, as they were unwilling to pay his $3.116 million base salary for the upcoming season. Seattle viewed Taylor as a situational edge rusher, primarily due to his struggles in defending the run. With Taylor’s contract situation in mind, the Seahawks decided to part ways with him and move forward with other options on their roster.

While Coach Eberflus commended the efforts of Chicago’s defensive line during training camp, the addition of Taylor signifies the Bears’ commitment to improving their pass rush. With a focus on pressuring quarterbacks, the Bears aim to address their low sack percentage and overall sack count from the previous season. Taylor’s arrival is expected to bolster the defense and provide a new dynamic to the team’s pass rush.

The trade of Darrell Taylor marks the second move made by Seahawks General Manager John Schneider in recent days. With a little under $8.5 million in cap space following the trade, the Seahawks have cleared Taylor’s base salary from their books. This trade allows Seattle to reallocate resources and potentially make further moves to strengthen their roster.

The acquisition of Darrell Taylor by the Chicago Bears represents a strategic move to enhance their pass rush and fortify their defense. With Taylor’s proven abilities as a pass rusher and his fit within the Bears’ defensive scheme, the team aims to improve their performance on defense and increase pressure on opposing quarterbacks. This trade underscores the Bears’ commitment to strengthening their roster and competing at a high level in the upcoming season.
