After a lengthy stint on the 60-day injured list, Trevor Story has finally been activated by the Boston Red Sox. The 31-year-old infielder had been sidelined due to a shoulder injury that required surgery following a diving stop attempt during a game against Anaheim on April 5. Making his return to the lineup, Story started at shortstop and batted seventh in his first game back since the season’s opening week. Prior to his activation, Story impressed during his rehab assignment with Triple-A Worcester, batting a solid .375 in four games.
Red Sox manager Alex Cora expressed his confidence in Story’s physical readiness to return to action. Speaking before Saturday’s game, Cora stated, “Honestly, the baseball side of it is great. That’s awesome for us, but he’s ready to go. Physically, we feel he’s in a good spot.” The projected recovery time for Story’s injury was initially set at six months, but discussions about his potential return to the lineup gained momentum following the All-Star break. Cora reflected on his initial doubts about Story’s ability to play again after the injury in April, but acknowledged that the change of scenery during his rehab stint in California proved beneficial for Story’s recovery.
A two-time All-Star during his tenure with the Colorado Rockies, Trevor Story is now in the third season of a lucrative $140 million, six-year contract with the Red Sox. Despite the setback of his injury earlier in the season, Story had been hitting .226 with four RBI in eight games prior to being sidelined. Throughout his nine-year career, Story has maintained a solid .265 batting average with 177 home runs and 534 RBI. His return to the Red Sox lineup is expected to bolster the team’s offense and defensive capabilities.
In order to make room for Trevor Story on the active roster, the Red Sox opted to option infielder Mickey Gaspar to Triple-A. This decision reflects the team’s commitment to integrating Story back into the lineup and making space for his contributions on the field. With Story’s reinstatement, the Red Sox are poised to benefit from his experience, skill set, and leadership both on and off the field.
